Five Phases Wheel

A visual research instrument for exploring Wu Xing as five recurring modes of transformation: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water.

Relationships, correspondences, and framework notes are labeled so the tool remains source-transparent and avoids presenting one interpretive model as universal doctrine.

Five Phases Wheel

Wu Xing Instrument

Explore Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water as living phases of generation, regulation, transformation, and return.

The Five Phases are not five inert elements. They are five recurring modes of change whose meaning emerges through movement, sequence, regulation, and relationship.

Generating relationship

Wood generates Fire

Wood provides fuel for flame. Symbolically, growth and emergence may culminate in expression, heat, and radiance.

Symbolic cosmology is being described here, not modern scientific causation.

Earth as Late Summer

Seasonal Explorer

Earth is placed after Fire as a ripening, nourishing, integrating season.

Integration boundary

Taijitu and Bagua Relationship

One interpretive bridge maps yang emerging to Wood, yang flourishing to Fire, yin emerging to Metal, yin flourishing to Water, and Earth to central or transitional mediation.

This is labeled as an interpretive model, not a universal Taoist doctrine. Bagua-phase relationships should be framework-labeled before deeper publication.

Wood and Fire

Compare Mode

Wood

Wood is the mode of sprouting, reaching, planning, and directional emergence.

Fire

Fire is the mode of radiance, communication, heat, and expressive culmination.

Balance and Reflection

This reflective tool is not a medical assessment, diagnosis, or treatment recommendation.

  • Where is there too much expansion?
  • Where has regulation become domination?
  • What may require rest before renewal?
  • What complementary quality is missing?

Classical cosmology

Five Phases are presented as recurring modes of change whose meanings emerge through sequence, regulation, season, and relation.

This page should continue to distinguish symbolic cosmology from modern chemical or scientific explanation.

Chinese Astrology circa 246 BC: Wuxian Five Star Divination

Used for the Five Star planetary correspondences: Mercury/Water, Venus/Metal, Mars/Fire, Jupiter/Wood, and Saturn/Earth.

Are the Five Phases literal chemical elements?

No. This instrument presents them as recurring modes of transformation: movement, sequence, regulation, and relationship.

Is the controlling cycle destructive?

It is better read here as regulation. Overacting and counteracting modes show what happens when regulation becomes excessive or reversed.

Why is Earth shown in different seasonal models?

Earth has multiple placements in different frameworks, including center, late summer, and transitional periods. The tool labels the model instead of silently choosing one.

Are medical correspondences medical advice?

No. Any medical-system correspondences are historical-symbolic references only and should not be used for diagnosis or treatment.
